Visit Marino Ballena National Park Beach

This Costa Rica national park established in 1992 is famous for its iconic whale tail-shaped sandbar. Yes, it is breathtaking during low tide when you walk out to the sandbar! Be sure to take in the natural unspoiled beauty of the coastline as you make your way out to the sandbar. If you have time take a dip in the shallow waters and maybe join a snorkel, kayak or boat tour to have a chance to see the whales up close in this Whale watching wonderland. If possible visit Marino Ballena National Park during the Antarctic humpback whale migration season July to October. During this special season the mother whales nurse their calfs and teach them to breach in the warm shallow protected waters. I was so amazed at these magical creatures!

Travel Tip for the park - Take water, sunscreen, snacks and a hat for this vast beach venture. The sun can be intense! There are no vendors inside the park but there are some small vendors located right outside the entrance. So grab a Pipa Fria (this is a cold natural coconut filled with refreshing coconut water chock full of natural electrolytes) before heading inside. Also check local tide schedules and be prepared for the $6 dollar entrance fee (credit card only). Seniors and children under 11 are free. When I visit The Marino Ballena National Park, I feel as though the crowds are left behind, so if your are looking for natural open space this is for you!

Hidden Waterfall Gems

Explore and uncover hidden waterfalls, such as Nauyaca waterfalls where cascading waters and lush foliage create a magical oasis. A hiking adventure is recommended to reach the stunning waterfalls where you can swim in the clear refreshing waters, and enjoy the surrounding natural beauty. The self hike with directional signage is moderate about five miles round trip about 1-1.5 hours each way so start out early in the morning. If you are not up for walking to the waterfalls you can pay for a ride to the waterfalls either by horse or truck. Pack sunscreen, swimsuit, hat, snacks and water. This is a must see in the area and weekends are a busier time to visit.

Alturas Wildlife Sanctuary

Get up close to Costa Rica's diverse wildlife at this wildlife rescue and rehabilitation center. The sanctuary provides a safe haven for injured and orphaned animals, including monkeys, sloths, toucans and more.

Surfer’s Paradise Found with Surfing and Paddle boarding

Catch the perfect wave and ride the rhythm of the Pacific Ocean in one of Costa Rica's most renowned surfing destinations. Uvita is a surfer's paradise with Playa Hermosa beach as suitable for both beginners and experienced surfers. You can also try paddle boarding in the calm waters of the nearby Baru river and mangroves. Grab a board and take a lesson.

Venture into the Jungle

Calling all wildlife lover’s this area is an eco-exploration extravaganza! Become one with nature and embark on thrilling eco-tours, encountering wildlife and rich biodiversity along the way thru the lush rainforests on guided hikes or canopy zip-line tours. As you hike or soar thru the treetops keep an eye out for wildlife such as howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys ,sloths ,toucans, scarlet macaw and colorful frogs.

Packing Tip - Wear quick dry clothing in the rainforest you will thank me for sure! Things can get a bit sticky!! Speaking of quick dry, my all time favorite packed item that I never leave behind in my travels is a Buff which is an all purpose bandana type scarf that can be a headband, head and or neck covering which comes in handy for active humid climates.

Tropical Romance at Sunset at Playa Hermosa

Ignite the spark and create lasting memories with your loved one amidst the romantic backdrop of pacific ocean sunsets and starlit skies on the vast sands of Hermosa Beach. This beach offers a laid-back chill vibe with surfers and locals catching a wave. Horseback riding at sunset on Hermosa will be unforgettable if you take a guided sunset horseback ride. Park your rental car under the tree canopy and have a tail gate or beach picnic. My cooler is always packed with Ceviche ,Plantain chips, and the local beer Imperial. Super refreshing! My favorite is to add ice, salt and a mandarina which is a local citrus fruit that is similar to an orange and lime to the Imperial. Locals call this “Imperial michelada”

Travel Tip - There are lifeguards stationed at Hermosa and lockers for securing valuables.

Try Traditional Costa Rican Cuisine

Try a local Costa Rican Tico soda which is a family owned restaurant and learn about traditional Costa Rican dishes such as casado, ceviche and gallo de pinto. It's a great way to connect and a delicious way to immerse yourself in the local culture.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Explore the vibrant marine life and coral reefs of Uvita and nearby protected Cano Island Reserve by snorkeling or scuba diving. There are several dive shops in the area that offer guided tours to the island which is about an hour boat ride off the coast of Uvita. The boats leave from Marino Ballena National Park.

Visit a local small coffee farm

Whether you're a coffee enthusiast, a nature lover or simply seeking an authentic cultural experience, the small coffee farm tour at Cafe Don Emilio promises to be a unique journey from bean to cup at this small family operated coffee farm. It is amazing to see the red coffee fruit on the trees and then to witness the process of drying and roasting and lastly brewing for your cup. You have not tasted coffee until you have sipped from fresh beans brewed thru the traditional Costa Rican chorreader. Kinda looks like a sock but trust me it is amazing. You will need an extra suitcase for the coffee you will be lugging home!

Sea Turtle Nesting Wonder

Volunteer to be apart of the sea turtle protection and conservation efforts. Nesting season is from June to December with the best months to see the turtles hatch are September and October .
